Socket Server for PHP Chat System?

I was told that a simple PHP (with Ajax) chat sy开发者_如何学运维stem wont be able to support more than a hundred users before it's too much for the system unless I use a socket server. Is this true? And if so, where can I learn about creating a socket server or w/e?
