Storing data as a string on an LMS

I am starting to build an application on an LMS. I need to store the users progression through the app. Sections will be laid out like

    1.1,
    1.2,
    1.3
Section 2:
    2.1,
    2.2,
    2.3,
    2.4

Etc... I am able to store this data in a single string so I am thinking storing it as a JSON string. Does that sound like the best route or should I try something else?
