Improve this question- We are thinking of an IRC server for ops/devs during problem solving.
- Makes it easy for folks to see what is going on plus the log acts as future reference. But this need to be inside the company.
- We are a small startup, so VPN et al are out of our reach for now.
I am not tried this personally however a quick search for "ssl irc server" had a bunch of results, here is a server towards the top of the list: http://www.unrealircd.com/about.php
You can simply start with an IRC server running inside the network. If needed, you can require SSL for the IRC connection. Furthermore, the server could be password-protected so that not everyone can use it.
You could maybe start with http://www.atheme.org/project/charybdis, as it provides services as well.
Using services such as NickServ or ChanServ, nick and channel ownership can be established, and channel administration managed.
