Replace with newline python

I have a string

a=">NKMFFALGLLGDGVIGALDTVVSSMGAVGASGLS"

I want print a as

">
NKMFFALGLLGDGVIGALDTVVSSMGAVGASGLS"

I did a=a.replace(">","> \n") but it doesn开发者_高级运维't work. Where am I going wrong?
